Guess you might think we are crazy or you might be wondering what we meant by freezing your computer. How would you feel as a Supervisor of an ICT department of an organisation/company/establishment where you do not:
- need to make a new, clean OS install every 1-2 years because the computer became too slow
- need to worry about data loss due to hackers, trojaners, viruses, system crashes, etc etc
- need to worry about whether or not Windows’ System Restore works (it never worked in my case)
Deep Freeze, by Faronics, is an application available for the Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and SUSE Linux operating systems which allows system administrators to protect the core operating system and configuration files on a workstation or server by restoring a computer back to its original configuration each time the computer restarts.
Faronics Deep Freeze makes your computer indestructible (nothing is indestructible mind you). It protects your computer by freezing its original configuration, which prevents unwelcome or unwanted changes from sticking. With a simple “reboot-to-restore”, your system integrity is maintained helping your machine to run smoothly and efficiently. Faronics Deep Freeze will have you spending more time in your home/office and less time in the repair shop.
Once installed, Deep Freeze has two states, “thawed” and “frozen.” As you might have guessed, when thawed you configure your system precisely the way you want it to be restored. When frozen, the system will then be restored to that state on the next reboot. You can freeze and thaw as needed to update the system with any changes you’d like to keep.
Faronics Deep Freeze helps eliminate computer downtime and damage by making computer configurations and settings indestructible. Once installed on your computer, any changes made while in session, whether accidental or malicious, are never permanent! Whether it’s the inevitable drift of your configuration settings, accidental misconfiguration or even malicious software, Deep Freeze gives you back your computer’s original condition every time you restart your machine.
Deep Freeze only protects workstations in a “fresh-booted” state. That is, Deep Freeze prevents permanent tampering with protected hard drives/partitions across reboots, but user activity between restarts is not limited by the program. For example, Deep Freeze does not prevent application installation; a user can install a modified version of a Web browser (but seemingly harmless to the unknowing user) designed to secretly send users’ passwords to a server connected to the Internet. As a workaround, Deep Freeze can be configured to restart after user logout, shutdown after a chosen period of inactivity, or restart/shutdown at a scheduled time in an attempt to ensure that no such installations are retained (as rebooting the system returns the system to its original, unmodified state).
Deep Freeze cannot protect the operating system and hard drive upon which it is installed if the computer is booted from another medium (such as an external hard drive, a USB device, optical media, or network server). In such cases, a user would have real access to the contents of the (supposedly) frozen system. On a Windows-based computer, this scenario may be prevented by configuring the CMOS (nonvolatile BIOS memory) on the workstation to boot only to the hard drive to be protected, then password protecting the CMOS. This is a normal precaution for most public access computers. A further precaution would be to lock the PC case shut with a physical lock or tiedown cable system to prevent access to motherboard jumpers.
Deep Freeze can protect hard drive partitions of up to a 2 TB capacity (using NTFS).
The protection can be turned off without having the password by using Deep Freeze Unfreezer.
Deep Freeze will cost you $180 (thats about #30,000 naira)
Finally, I will strongly recommend this for clients that have multiple pcs on their network with several users. For individuals, i will recommend getting Igloo too (this is also a package from Faronics). Igloo provides you with the opportunity to redirect your folders even when the computer is frozen.
- You would not be able to hibernate your pc but you can put your pc to sleep.
- Whenever you shut down your pc, Deep Freeze will take your system back to the frozen state and all major changes and mistake would be overwrriten.
- Ensure you install igloo on the pc.
