Now you can tether too…wirelessly

If you own any of these BlackBerry phones: Bold 9790/9900/9930, Curve 9350/9360/9370/9380/9220/9320, and Torch 9810/9850/9860, then you’ll be able to make your phone a wireless hotspot. But first, you’ll have to update to OS 7.1 which varies in size from 50MB to slightly over 70MB (on both devices I’ve updated). But you’ll have to download the update via a wi-fi connection with a (preferably) fully charged battery…and may be get some tea and crumpets 🙂

After a successful update,  your Manage Connections screen should now look like this:

You’ll now be able to connect to  your BB the same way you would to a Mi-Fi device available  from mobile carriers without having to buy one (so you’ll have saved some money) or the usual hotspot, create a wireless access key a.k.a password to prevent strangers or your friends who love too much free stuff 😉

You’ll also be able to connect up to five devices at a time. Of course, the more devices you connect the lower your average connect speed. You might want to switch your phones mobile connection to 3G to avail yourself of the fastest speeds possible particularly if you have little to no problems with 3G coverage where you live or work .
